Chapter 13

“It appears that way,” I said, and I downed the rest of my glass of bourbon in one go.

“I can’t believe this,” Ally laughed hysterically. “I mean, seriously? As if this couldn’t get any worse. Now the dragons are radioactive, too?”

“This is fucking crazy,” Shannon agreed. “And the news conveniently left that out of their broadcast.”

“Of course they did,” I said. “They don’t want to panic the entire nation. Though we probably should panic at this point.”

“Ya think?” Ally scoffed. “Who cares about panicking everyone? Everyone is already panicking. I mean, the public has a right to know what’s going on, don’t they?”

“Not if they think it will incite a riot or something,” Shannon said.

“Wait, seriously?” Ally asked.

“Sure.” Shannon shrugged. “They don’t have to give out any information. I mean, they should, but legally they aren’t obligated to. It’s called freedom of the press. That means they can report whatever and however they want, within reason, of course. And if they say they thought giving that information out would cause an uproar, then nobody’s going to tell them they were wrong. It’s a valid reason in most courts’ eyes.”

“That’s insane.” Ally shook her head.

“Someone else has reported it, though,” Shannon reminded her. “The public looks out for the public a lot of the time when it comes to issues like this.”

“At least we know,” I agreed.

“Thank god we’re on the water right now,” Ally said. “If we were on land, we’d be getting exposed to so much radiation I can’t even fathom it. I mean… is anybody around the meteorites going to live for long? Won’t the radiation kill them or mutate them?”

“It could,” I said. “But maybe not right away.”

“Aren’t there still effects from Hiroshima today?” Shannon pushed. “Like mutated fish and all that shit. The U.S. is going to be next in line for that nonsense.”

“It’s not just us,” I informed her. “Africa and South America have gotten it bad, too. Apparently, the meteor storm hasn’t moved as much as they predicted, because nobody’s addressed that so far.”

“Or maybe it has, and they just don’t want to panic people, like you said,” Ally suggested.

“That could be possible, too,” I agreed. “Either way, we can’t just sit by right now. We need to be proactive. Ally, we need to finish the plan we started earlier and start gathering supplies.”

“You’re right.” She nodded and gulped hard. “It’s clear society isn’t returning to normal anytime soon.”

“I can help with whatever you need,” Shannon offered.

“I took a lot of canned goods and things from one of the other yachts in the harbor,” I explained. “And those supplies might last us a couple of weeks, but with the state of the world right now, there’s really no telling how long it’s going to take us to get to Hawaii. And now there’s fucking radioactive dragons to worry about. Along with other ships, and who knows what else. The boat could break down, we could run out of fuel and be forced to only use the sail alone.
